What Is Art?

When most people consider decorating their walls with artwork they think of paintings or prints. But their are lots of other things that can make a living space interesting. How about a hunk of wood. In this case, a piece of the original hull from one of the most famous ships in history.

The USS Constitution is the world's oldest commissioned seaworthy warship. Built between 1794 to 1797, and named by George Washington, the 3-masted heavy frigate earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" after cannon balls were seen bouncing off of her 21-inch thick oak hull during a War of 1812 naval battle with the British warship Guerriere. With a primary mission of training and education, the Constitution still sails ceremonially.

In 1995 the ship underwent major repairs and an overhaul designed to restore it to it's original design and seaworthiness. At this time some of the original wood needed to be replaced. Rather than discarding this material, it was saved for historical artifacts. In the picture shown here you will see a piece of the original hull of the USS Constitution next to Marshall Johnson's wonderful 19th century painting of the ship on the high seas.

This project was done for a US Navy Captain as a gift for his son, who is also a naval officer. It is one of the most stunning historical pieces we have done and we hope you enjoy seeing it.
