7 From Maple Grove and Wayzata High Schools Named National Merit Scholars

Four students awarded corporate-sponsored merit scholarships are residents of Maple Grove.

Two students at Maple Grove Senior High School and five students at Wayzata High School are National Merit Scholars, according to an April 24, 2013 announcement from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Four of the seven students to receive corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships in the first round of National Merit scholar announcements are Maple Grove residents.

The Wayzata High School students (with sponsoring corporations) are:

  • Abram D. Sanderson of Maple Grove (Chevron)
  • Kyle Y. Li of Maple Grove (General Mills)
  • Catherine J. Sun of Plymouth (Cargill)
  • Jenny Lai of Plymouth (Emerson Electric)
  • Madeleine G. North of Medina (LPL Financial)

The Maple Grove Senior High School students are:

  • Sean P. McKenna of Maple Grove (United Parcel Service)
  • Martha L. Waterfield of Maple Grove (Bayer)

Most corporate-sponsored scholarships provide annual stipends of $500–$10,000 per year, or a single payment of $2,500–$5,000.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's announcement:

Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for Finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.
