Affordable Care Act/Obamacare/MNSure

Enrollment for MNSure Starts Oct 1

I have worked in healthcare for 40+ years, and as a Clinic Manager, have seen the challenges faced by the uninsured and under-insured to seek the care they need.  This has fueled my interest in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), that some call Obamacare.  I am also a Volunteer with AARP, and we are trying to get the ACA information out in my community

If you are uninsured, under-insured, or on Medicare, this information can be helpful to you and your family:

You can no longer be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions.  In 2013 children cannot be denied coverage, and adults cannot be denied coverage starting January 1, 2014

There is no longer annual and lifetime caps on your benefits.  I’m sure you know someone who had to file bankruptcy because of high medical bills

Your children to age 26 can be covered by your plan even if they are married, not in school or do not live in your home.  This was implemented in 2013.  If you have an employee sponsored plan, check with your Human Resource department 

There are no co-pays or deductibles for certain recommended Preventive health services, such as Immunizations, Mammograms, and screenings for diabetes and certain cancers

You have the freedom to choose the plan that meets the needs of your family, and a cost you can afford, and each of the four levels of plans cover a Core set of 10 comprehensive benefits

If you are Single and make less than $45,000/year you may qualify for financial assistance to help pay for your premium

For couples who make less than $62,040 you may qualify for financial assistance to help pay for your premium

For a family of four that makes less than $94,200/year, you may qualify for financial assistance to help pay for your premium

If you have Medicare, you will start seeing lower out-of-pocket costs for drugs
