While cheerleading’s traditional roots are seeded in cheering for other sports teams, such as football or basketball; there is another side of cheerleading that is purely competitive. A person will still find megaphones, poms and “crowd-leading” on the cheerleading competition mat, however competition cheerleading involves performing and being judged on a routine. The routines are 2 minutes & 30 seconds and consist of tumbling, dancing, motions, stunting, and jumping.
The cheerleading program at Maple Grove Senior High provides opportunities for athletes to experience the competition side of the sport. This new opportunity has created tremendous growth in our program from an average of 30 athletes a season to almost 65 this Winter!
The Maple Grove Senior High Cheerleaders competed the first weekend in November at the 10,000 Lakes Regional competition, which is an National High School Cheerleading Championship qualifier. They were excited to find out both of their Varsity teams received bids to compete at the National High School Cheerleading Championship in February. They will be traveling to Orlando, Florida February 7-11, 2013 with 28 cheerleaders, 2 coaches, and 6 chaperones to represent Maple Grove Senior High School. Their goal is to take at least one of our teams into finals and place as one of the best teams in the country.
