Child, Woman Hanged In Apparent Murder/Suicide​: Orono​ Police

Officers were originally requested to check the welfare of a child who had not been returned to his father.

ORONO, MN — A Twin Cities community is shocked and disturbed after police officers found a 47-year-old woman and a five-year-old boy dead in an Orono home Monday. Police said the boy and woman were hanged and are calling it an apparent murder/suicide.

In the afternoon of Sept. 4, officers with the Orono Police Department were requested to check the welfare of a child who had not been returned to his father. An officer responded to the residence, noted the home was secure and that nobody answered the door.

At 8 p.m., police were called back to the residence and were met by another family member, who gave officers the keys to the residence and asked police to check inside the home. Officers entered the home and found a suspected 47-year-old female and a five-year-old boy deceased. Both people were hanged, police said.

The woman was identified as Gina Summers, 46, and the boy was Jude Summers-Sandburg, age 5.

Orono police are working with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s crime lab and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office with the investigation.
