Color Blocking

Color blocking is one of the hottest fashion trends this year. It's simply mixing several different colors into one outfit. You can color block either by pairing a top with different colored bottoms, pairing an outfit with different colored accessories, or wearing an item that is already color blocked. Super easy!
Certain colors go together best, like blue and yellow and orange and pink. But how do you know exactly which colors to pair?

Monochromatic color blocking is pairing the same color in different shades. For example, pairing a light blue blouse with a dark blue skirt. I personally think this looks best with cool tones like blues or purples.
Neutral color blocking is of course using blacks, whites or browns. You can create a look out of all neutrals, or you can compliment a neutral with a bright color. It's also an easy way to include bright-colored denim, this summer's other hot trend. Throw together a pair of red pants with a interesting black top.
Complimentary color blocking is an effective way of mixing three different colors. Draw an even triangle over the color wheel. Wherever the three points touch, you have your combination. You can mix the three different colors by wearing pants in one color, a top in another and a blazer or shoes in the third color.
Analogous colors are ones that are directly next to each other on the wheel, like blue and green and orange and red. These look great if you're mixing two different colors. Pair light blue pants with a yellow top or an orange top with a pink skirt. Analogous color blocking is also perfect when mixing a neutral top with colored pants and a contrasting accessory.
I've included a color wheel which will provide countless ideas on how to be more playful and brave with using colors. One hint, a nice chunky chain in either silver or gold and a pair of nude shoes is a must!

My whole outfit in the top picture is a last year's Target purchase.
