Driver Had Morning Vodka Shots Before Fatal Blaine Crash: Cops
Police say Sheryl Ann Miller, a pedestrian, was killed by a drunken driver on the morning of Dec. 6.
BLAINE, MN — A 42-year-old man is accused of driving drunk and fatally striking a pedestrian Friday morning in Blaine.
Matt Warren Hastreiter of Lexington, Minnesota, has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide (alcohol concentration of .08 or more) in connection with the crash that killed Sheryl Ann Miller, 52, of Blaine.
Just after 6 a.m. Friday, Blaine police officers were dispatched to Naples Street near Lake Drive regarding a collision involving a pedestrian. Police found Miller lying on the road at the scene. She was later pronounced dead.

Police said they identified the driver who hit her as Hastreiter.
Hastreiter stopped and remained at the scene after the crash, investigators said. Police noticed a "faint odor of alcohol" on him, according to the criminal complaint. Hastreiter admitted that he had "eight shots of vodka the night before" and "three more shots of vodka" that morning, the complaint states.

He performed sobriety tests, including the one-leg stand and the walk-and-turn, both of which he failed, police said. A breath test revealed he had a blood alcohol content of .117, according to the criminal complaint.
Hastreiter faces up to 10 years in prison and a $6,000 fine if convicted.
