7 p.m. Program
Many residents of Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center have had a hard time with keeping a roof over their families the last few years. Foreclosures in these two cities have been the highest of suburban foreclosure rates with one in five homes foreclosed during the housing crisis. At the same time rental rates have increased and are too expensive for many lower income families. Join us for this great opportunity to get an overview of approaches to providing housing for families who are having a hard time meeting this essential need.
The Metropolitan Council's long-range planning effort, called Thrive MSP 2040, will develop a plan for the 7-county metropolitan area for the next 30 years. Two members of the Work Group for the Housing Policy Plan, Nelima Sitati-Munene and Owen Duckworth, will join us. Mr. Duckworth will explain the goals of the Fair Housing Equity Assessment and its coordination with Thrive MSP 2040. Nelima Sitati-Munene will explain the challenges she faces in representing her community which includes many lower income and minority families.
Though foreclosures in the Northwest suburbs have eased, they are still higher than historical norms. We will hear from Ron Elwood, the attorney who helped craft the Foreclosure Relief Law recently passed by the MN Legislature. He will explain how this law, together with others passed over the last several years, will offer greater protection to home owners and renters facing foreclosure.
