According to the criminal complaint, the boy’s mother called 911 Saturday night because her son was not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they found the child bruised and unconscious. He died the next night.
Doctors determined he had head and eye injuries and was bruised on his left arm, shoulder, ear, cheek and forehead, all indicative of child abuse, according to police.

Mitchell, the boy and his mother rented a room in the Crystal home of another family. A woman living elsewhere in the house said Mitchell had been beating the boy since the family moved in two months ago, according to a news release.
She said the night paramedics were called, she heard loud thuds coming from Mitchell’s apartment and then the sound of the boy crying.
Another witness said he heard the defendant yelling, “shut up,” followed by banging noises, the complaint states.
Mitchell told police he had hit the boy numerous times as punishment, sometimes with a flip-flop shoe, but that he also made sure he didn’t hit the child too hard, according to the complaint.
