Orono Schools Put On Lockdown After 'Threat Of Gun Violence'

Police asked Orono Public Schools to enact a lockdown Wednesday and requested help from the FBI to deal with a "direct threat."

ORONO, MN — One juvenile has been arrested following a lockdown at Orono Public Schools that began Wednesday just after 11 a.m. and lasted through the afternoon. The district enacted lockdown procedures under the advisement of Orono police.

Roads around the schools were closed and parents were asked not to come onto the school campus. All after school athletics, activities, classes and meetings were canceled.

The lockdown followed a number of threats made in connection with the school district.

On Tuesday, Orono police were alerted to a "potential threat" posted on social media that included an image of a gun. "That threat was investigated and found to not be credible," police said in a news release.

On Wednesday, two additional threats were made via social media. Police said the first threat was vague but the second was "a direct threat of gun violence at the Orono Schools."
