The Maple Grove Senior High Crimson varsity football team goes down in a nail bitter against Robbinsdale Armstrong 18-16 on Thursday evening.

The Crimson (0-1, 0-1 Northwest Suburban Conference) had a shot to beat the Falcons late, but Armstrong—which held a 12-9 halftime lead—held on for the victory.

With 1:33 remaining, Maple Grove missed a field goal that would have given the Crimson the lead. Maple Grove did get the ball back one last time but was unable to capitalize.

It is Maple Grove’s third straight loss to Armstrong in three consecutive seasons, including a 2009 playoff loss and a 14-7 defeat in Week 5 last year.

The Crimson did not get their first win a year ago until week 4, when they defeated Park Center 19-12. Maple Grove hopes to get that first victory of 2011 next week when the Crimson travel to face Champlin Park. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.
