Sodium Hydroxide Tanker Crash: Northern MN School On Alert

Highway 23 in northern Minnesota closed Wednesday morning after a tanker carrying sodium hydroxide​ rolled over, spilling diesel fuel.

KANABEC COUNTY, MN — Highway 23 near Ogilvie closed Wednesday morning after a tanker carrying sodium hydroxide rolled over, spilling diesel fuel. The driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) reported. No sodium hydroxide escaped the tanker. The chemical will be pumped into another tanker on scene, according to MSP.

Authorities say there is no threat to the public, but a nearby school in Olgilvie was notified and they are "on alert." As of 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Highway 23 remained closed.
