Weaver Lake Elementary Principal Named 2012 Science and Math Principal of the Year

Gretchen Peel, principal of the , has been named 2012 Science and Math Principal of the Year by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals' Association and the Science Museum of Minnesota.

The state-level award recognizes "the vital importance of fostering lifelong science and math literacy and honors the key role principals play in developing a culture that encourages and celebrates student interest in math and science."

Peel will be recognized at the annual MESPA Institute 2012 Banquet and Awards Program on Feb. 2, and will receive a plaque and $400 worth of school programming from the Science Museum.

"Creating a STEM school has been an exciting challenge," said Peel. "I have been privileged to work with talented teachers who have been committed to creating an outstanding educational program for our students. We have learned together. Every day I am awed by what our student scientists are learning and doing. This honor from MESPA and the Science Museum of Minnesota is a reflection of all of us at Weaver Lake - staff, students and parents."

The nomination for Peel noted that “…Peel has developed a strong trust with all stakeholders by developing clear expectations, providing consistent, spirited leadership and pushing, prodding and pulling until goals are met or surpassed,” the nomination included. “As Weaver Lake Elementary has undergone a metamorphosis from elementary school to magnet school of science, technology, engineering and math, Mrs. Peel’s focus has never wavered, and thus the teachers, students, parents and community have been transformed.”

Weaver Lake Elementary, located in Maple Grove, is part of the and is a science, math, and technology magnet school.
