21-Year-Old From Mounds View Found Dead In College Dorm Room

A Minnesota family is working to establish a scholarship in the name of 2015 Irondale High School graduate Jakob Ernst after he was found dead in his Arizona State University dorm room. Police are still investigating the cause of death for the Mounds View native.

When Ernst didn’t show up to classes April 26, a friend going to check on him found the 21-year-old dead on the floor of his room. Ernst was in good health prior to his death, according to his father.

In lieu of flowers, Ernst's family is asking for donations via GoFundMe so they can present a scholarship in his name to a graduate of Irondale's class of 2019.

"This scholarship will assist low income students, who have a will and desire to learn, to continue in their education," reads his obituary. "Education and being able to help others was very near and dear to Jakob’s heart."

Ernst was was studying finance, international business and global marketing at Arizona.

"Since he got his first five dollars, he’s wanted to save money to figure out how he could make more ," Robert Ernst, Jakob's father, told the Pioneer Press. "Investing is something he’s always liked. He’s always been a very money-manageable young adult."
