Mendota Heights Officials Consider Allowing Urban Chickens

On Tuesday, the Mendota Heights City Council heard a presentation from residents who want the city to repeal its ban on chickens.

Mendota Heights residents may have some new neighbors soon: urban chickens.

Lillie News reported that on Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Mendota Heights City Council heard a presentation from residents who wants the city to repeal its ban on chickens.

Mendota Heights officials previously denied a request to allow chickens in residential parts of the city.

Chickens are not considered a domestic animal in Mendota Heights and therefor residents are not permitted to house them.

Some community members are not pleased with the idea allowing chickens to roam free in people's backyards, and are particularly wary of the resulting odor from the chickens.

Officials voted to have the planning commission study the topic and outline the parameters for a new city ordinance.
