Old, Unstable Chemical Prompts Bomb Squad Response In South St. Paul

Crews found a highly flammable chemical in the 200 block of 22nd Avenue South that may be unstable due to its age.

SOUTH ST. PAUL, MN — South St. Paul police and South Metro Fire crews responded to a hazardous materials situation in the 200 block of 22nd Avenue South after discovering an old chemical that is highly flammable and potentially unstable.

Due to the chemical's age, responders called in the St. Paul Police Department Bomb Squad to assist with safely transporting the substance for eventual destruction.

Authorities said they do not believe there is a broader public safety risk and expected responders to clear the area shortly.

"If our understanding of this situation changes, we will notify impacted neighbors," the South St. Paul Police Department said in a statement.

No injuries were reported. Updates will be provided if conditions change.
