Prom Season Warning: Serving Alcohol To Minors Can Be Deadly

TWIN CITIES, MN — Prom season is a time to make memories and celebrate with friends. However, state law enforcement is reminding students that if not done responsibly and legally, prom "could be the last party you ever attend."

In Minnesota, selling alcohol to a minor or buying it for those under 21 can lead to criminal charges or civil law suits if injury or death is suffered due to the intoxicated minor.

State officials said during April and May between 2011 and 2015, there were 171 crashes involving teen drivers that led to six deaths and 14 serious injuries.

Parents and guardians: know that you can be held responsible for serving alcohol to minors and that it’s important to educate your teens on the dangers of consuming alcohol and driving under the influence.

State officials are also reminding establishments and liquor stores to card every customer, every time.
