Henry Sibley junior Maya Strohm participated in the Minnesota House of Representatives' High School Page Program in March. During the week-long program, Strohm and other high school students had the opportunity to work at the State Capitol, learn more about politics, and meet state legislators. Students from across Minnesota are selected to participate based on their application, essay and faculty recommendations.
For Strohm, the Page Program was a new way to get involved at the Capitol. She had visited the Capitol through other programs, including the Jewish Women's Morning at the Capitol, and was familiar with her state representatives and senators, but still learned new things through the Page Program.
"I liked being able to meet with lots of different people," Strohm said, listing Minority Leader Kurt Daudt, Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, and Speaker of the House Paul Thissen among the politicians she met."It was really cool to see different people's perspectives and make new connections."
As a Page, Strohm helped deliver notes to legislators during House floor sessions, track floor votes, make copies of bills and amendments, and more.
Even though Strohm plans to pursue a career in the medical field, she said the Page Program was a great experience and recommends it for other students.
"The week went by fast," she said. "I was surprised how much I enjoyed it!"
