St. Thomas Academy Hockey Wins Section Final
The St. Thomas Academy Cadets defeated the Totino-Grace Eagles 5-3 in the Section 4A final on Friday night and will head to the State Tournament.
The St. Thomas Academy prevailed 5-3 over Totino-Grace in a hard fought game that will send the Cadets to the upcoming State Tournament.
The majority of the game was evenly played going back and forth. A.J. Reid scored first for STA to put them up 1-0 early in the first period. Derek Lodermeier of Totino-Grace answered with a goal at the 9:39 mark to even the game. Reid scored again in the second period, this time on the power-play, to put the Cadets up 2-1 at the 5:19 mark. However, just like in the first period, Totino answered with a goal by T.J. Roo to send the game into the third period tied 2-2.
In the third period STA was able to gain control of the game with two consecutive scores by Zach Schroeder and Alex Johnsonat 10:23 and 11:04 respectively. Totino was able to keep the game interesting as Andrew McDonald
scored at the 12:28 to bring the game to a one goal deficit. This was also followed by a holding penalty on Zach Schroeder of STA to give Totino-Grace a great opportunity to yet again tie the game. However, the goalkeeping of David Zevnik and the Cadet penalty kill was successful in holding the lead. Eventually, Andrew Commers of STA sealed the game with a goal at the 15:18 mark to make the final 5-3.

The final shot count was 34 to 26 in favor of STA. Totino-Grace's Nick DeMuth had 29 saves and Cadet David Zevnik had 23. The Cadets will now advance to the Minnesota State Tournament.
