2 Killed In Anoka Crash Were Fleeing Police: Sheriff

Police had attempted to stop the 2000 Buick LeSabre in Coon Rapids shortly before the fatal crash in Anoka, according to authorities.

ANOKA, MN — Two men who died after an overnight car crash in Anoka had been fleeing police, according to law enforcement.

The events leading up to the collision began about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when a Coon Rapids police officer tried to stop a 2000 Buick LeSabre on Hanson Boulevard Northwest near Gateway Drive Northwest, authorities said. The driver fled and a pursuit ensued but was called off by Coon Rapids police when the car crossed into Anoka, according to a news release from the Anoka County sheriff.

About a mile after the chase ended, the vehicle was involved in a crash with a 2006 Dodge Ram on Main Street near Ferry Street, police said. The driver of the Buick died in the crash, and his passenger was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, according to police. The driver of the Ram suffered minor injuries and was released at the scene, police said.

The crash is under investigation and the names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to police.
