CASS COUNTY, MN — A woman from Minneapolis was injured in a bear attack ahead of the holiday weekend outside a cabin in rural Cass County, according to police.

The 65-year-old was in Fairview Township on Thursday and had let a dog outside around midnight when she heard the pet having some sort of confrontation, police said. The woman went outdoors to retrieve the dog and encountered a black bear, which hit her in the chest and arm, and knocked her to the ground, according to police.

Relatives scared the animal away from the yard and the woman was taken to a hospital after suffering injuries to her shoulder, chest and back, police said. Images posted on social media by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office show long scratches surrounded by bruising on the woman’s arm.
