8 Inches Of New Snow Likely For Twin Cities Metro: MN Weather

A snowstorm on track to hit central Minnesota will be slow but powerful, according to the National Weather Service.

MINNEAPOLIS — A significant snowstorm could drop around 8 inches of snow on the Twin Cities metro area over a two-day period this week, according to the latest forecast.

"A large and slow-moving storm system will bring significant snow across the Upper Midwest. Blowing/ drifting snow and blizzard conditions possible across parts of the region," the National Weather Service said.

"Winter Storm Watch decision to come later today after better grasp on timing. It isn’t a question of amounts, rather, timing and duration of watch."

The heavy snow is expected to come in two waves, the NWS adds:

  • Late Tuesday through Wednesday morning
  • Late Wednesday through Thursday.

The second wave will bring the heaviest snow with a solid chance of blizzard conditions.

Here's the full NWS forecast from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport:

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 18. West northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south southeast after midnight.

Washington's Birthday: A chance of snow before 2pm, then a chance of rain and snow between 2pm and 5pm, then a chance of snow after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Breezy, with a south wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 13. Breezy, with a west northwest wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.

Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of snow after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 22. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming east northeast in the afternoon. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Tuesday Night: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Patchy blowing snow before midnight, then patchy blowing snow after 4am. Low around 17. Blustery, with a northeast wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches possible.

Wednesday: Snow. Patchy blowing snow. High near 24. Blustery, with a northeast wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Wednesday Night: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow. Low around 13. Blustery, with a northeast wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Thursday: Snow, mainly before noon. The snow could be heavy at times. Widespread blowing snow, mainly before 7am. High near 18. Blustery, with a north northeast wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -5. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph.

Friday: A 20 percent chance of snow. Partly sunny, with a high near 17. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 10. South southeast wind around 10 mph.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 25. West wind around 10 mph.
