3 Dead, At Least 5 Injured In Mass Shooting At Minneapolis High-Rise: Officials

MINNEAPOLIS — A mass shooting Wednesday in downtown Minneapolis left three dead, including the assailant, and at least five more injured, three of whom were police officers, authorities said.

Police responded shortly after 4:30 p.m. to the incident in the area of the Loring Towers high-rise apartment building on East Grant Street, authorities said. The building is located just steps away from the Minneapolis Convention Center.

"Initial information indicated that one person had been shot," the city said in a social media post shortly after 7 p.m. "Additional 911 callers then reported hearing further gunfire."

Inside the building, officers encountered victims and heard more gunfire, according to the city. They followed the sound of gunfire to an upper floor, where they encountered a haze that significantly limited their visibility, the city said.

Three officers were injured, two by gunfire, according to the city, with all three taken to Hennepin Healthcare. One was undergoing surgery Wednesday evening, one suffered a shot to the leg that was not life-threatening, and the third was being evaluated for an injury that did not appear life-threatening.

"The suspected shooter is deceased, and one other person died at the scene," the city said. "Six others with apparent gunshot wounds were transported to Hennepin Healthcare. One of them died at the hospital."

The city asked people to avoid the area from 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and from Hennepin Avenue to Third Avenue South.

Minneapolis police were working with law enforcement partners, including the Minnesota State Patrol, St. Paul Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Metro Transit Police, and University of Minnesota Police Department, according to Frey.

"Minnesota is praying for our first responders," Gov. Tim Walz wrote in a post on X.

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X that his agency was aware of the shooting and that FBI personnel were responding.

Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth wrote in a post on X that she was "praying for the victims of this heinous crime" and "incredibly thankful for the massive response of our brave law enforcement officers."
