GOLDEN VALLEY, MN — KARE 11's Breaking The News, the popular conversational analysis program hosted by Jana Shortal for the past decade, is leaving broadcast television for a streaming only format starting Oct. 5.
Shortal announced the change at the end of Monday's broadcast, telling viewers it would be the show's last week on traditional TV.
The program will move exclusively to KARE 11 Plus and be available on demand through the station's streaming, connected TV and mobile apps.
KARE 11 News at 6 will expand to a full hour starting Sept. 28 to fill the slot, and Breaking The News will air live weekday shows at 5:30 p.m.
News director Matt Kummer told the Star Tribune that the move will give Shortal and her team more time and freedom for the storytelling, interviews and perspectives the show is known for.
KARE 11 general manager Doug Wieder pointed to streaming growth as the driver, saying the station saw a 104 percent increase in streaming minutes watched in 2025 and is on pace to beat that this year.
Shortal addressed the move directly on her Facebook page, posting that it has been the honor of her career to do Breaking The News on broadcast TV and that times are changing.
In a comment on that post, she thanked viewers for reaching out and said she has been told to direct all questions and comments to her leadership at TEGNA and KARE.
