MN Fuel Price Climbs To Highest Level Ever Recorded: AAA

One type of fuel set a new all-time record in Minnesota on Tuesday, and regular gas is up more than $1.30 from a year ago.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Diesel prices in Minnesota have climbed to the highest level ever recorded in the state.

The statewide average for a gallon of diesel hit $6.35 on Tuesday, Sept. 22, setting a new all-time record, AAA data shows.

That's up about 2 cents from Monday, 19 cents from a week ago and a full dollar from a month ago.

A year ago, diesel averaged about $3.62 a gallon in Minnesota. Drivers are now paying roughly $2.73 more per gallon.

Regular gas isn't far behind. The statewide average for regular unleaded sat at $4.38 on Tuesday, a hair below Monday's $4.39 but about 16 cents higher than a week ago and 24 cents higher than a month ago. At this time last year, the average was just $3.03, meaning regular is up about $1.35 per gallon year over year.

Regular unleaded is still below its own record. Minnesota's highest average for regular gas was about $4.76, set on June 15, 2022, according to AAA.

Mid-grade gas averaged $4.82 on Tuesday, while premium averaged $5.35.

Prices vary across the state. County averages tracked by AAA ranged from about $4.06 to $4.51 per gallon on Tuesday.

The spike is being driven largely by crude oil. In its most recent weekly update on Sept. 17, AAA said crude was averaging around $100 a barrel as volatility continues in the Strait of Hormuz. West Texas Intermediate crude settled at $102.43 a barrel on Sept. 16, down $3.40 on the day.

Nationally, the average for regular gas stood at $4.44 as of Sept. 17, up 16 cents in a week and more than a dollar above where it was a year earlier. AAA said prices have returned to levels last seen in the spring and are creeping toward this year's peak of $4.56, set May 21. The national all-time high remains $5.01, reached June 14, 2022.

Demand is also rising. Citing Energy Information Administration data, AAA reported that U.S. gasoline demand rose from 8.55 million to 8.79 million barrels per day last week, while domestic gasoline supply ticked up to 207.7 million barrels.

California had the most expensive gas in the country as of Sept. 17 at $6.08 a gallon, while Indiana had the cheapest at $3.92, according to AAA.

Electric vehicle owners in Minnesota are getting a better deal. The state ranked among the 10 cheapest for public EV charging at 37 cents per kilowatt hour, below the national average of 42 cents, AAA said.
