MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Minnesota Vikings stayed perfect Sunday, but anyone who bet on them to cover the spread against the Miami Dolphins walked away empty-handed, thanks to one unselfish decision by tight end T.J. Hockenson.
With Minnesota leading 15-10 late in the fourth quarter, quarterback Kyler Murray hit Hockenson in the left flat with open field between him and the end zone.
Hockenson slid down after securing the first down and stayed in bounds, keeping the clock moving. Because Miami was out of timeouts, the Vikings were able to take three knees and end the game without giving the ball back.
Sports bettors took notice right away, with many complaining because the move lost them money.
Minnesota opened the week as an 11.5-point favorite before the line drifted toward Miami, closing at 9.5 or 10.5 points depending on the sportsbook. A touchdown and extra point would have made it 22-10, enough to cover either number.
Instead, the five-point final handed Miami the cover despite the loss.
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell praised Hockenson after the game, calling the catch the "ultimate selfless play," Pro Football Network reported.
Kneeling out the clock also meant Minnesota's defense didn't have to take the field for one last stand.
Hockenson caught all 13 of his targets for 119 yards.
It was his fourth 100-yard game in a Vikings uniform, tying the franchise record for a tight end set by the late Joe Senser.
Kicker Will Reichard accounted for all 15 of Minnesota's points on five field goals. The Vikings did not score an offensive touchdown.
The Vikings (4-0) visit the New Orleans Saints next Sunday. Miami fell to 0-4.
