Today's riddle: Why did the cookie go to the hospital? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Is Your MN City A 'Marriage Garden' Or 'Marriage Desert'? New Report (patch.com) — New research using 2020 Census data shows two Minneapolis areas rank among the nation's biggest "marriage deserts," where only about one in five householders ages 15 to 64 are married. In contrast, nearby Twin Cities suburbs form a large "marriage garden," underscoring a sharp divide between Minneapolis city neighborhoods and surrounding communities in family structure and marriage prevalence.
2. Hourcar and Evie nonprofit carshare to end operations after 20 years (mprnews.org) — Minneapolis residents who rely on Evie Carshare will lose the service on Oct. 15, as nonprofit operator Hourcar shuts down after two decades due to rising costs and shrinking funding. The EV Spot charging stations owned by Minneapolis and St. Paul will remain available, but hundreds of shared cars will be removed unless a steep funding gap is quickly closed.
3. Police Officer Pulls Two from Overnight House Fire in Minneapolis (firehouse.com) — An overnight house fire in south Minneapolis' Seward neighborhood left one resident in critical condition and two others hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a Minnesota state trooper rushed inside to pull them out. Firefighters rescued a third person and a cat, but the home was declared a total loss. Officials say the trooper suffered minor smoke exposure, and investigators are still determining what caused the blaze.
4. Violence interrupter who reportedly returned fire during north Minneapolis shooting acquitted (kstp.com) — A violence interrupter formerly with the 21 Days of Peace initiative has been acquitted in federal court of charges tied to a 2025 shooting during a barbecue in north Minneapolis. Prosecutors alleged he and another interrupter fired back toward a suspected shooter after dozens of rounds were shot at them, leaving him wounded. The verdict closes a closely watched case involving community anti-violence workers and gunfire on Penn Avenue North.
5. Hillhaven release 'Out of Spite, Out of Mind' (nextmosh.com) — Hillhaven are bringing their hard rock and metalcore sound to Minneapolis with an October 20 show at 7th St Entry, supporting their new single "Out of Spite, Out of Mind." The track tackles anxiety and creative paralysis, and the band's brief tour also hits Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Cleveland later in the month.
