From April 17 - 19, 2026, the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP) will hold a 3-day Plenary conference to assess the state of its work to unify and liberate the African Nation and to prepare its members and supporters for the final offensive towards victory in the anti-colonial struggle. This year’s Plenary is themed, “This Time ‘Til it’s Won! Power in Our Own Hands! It’s not just Trump, it’s the whole damn system!”

While freedom-loving people throughout the world are courageously putting their lives on the line in opposition to the genocidal frenzy of U.S. international and domestic military aggression, the APSP calls on freedom-loving people to go beyond protest and build the liberated economy to negate the colonial mode of production.

Chairman Omali describes the significance of the upcoming Plenary: “The African People’s Socialist Party International Plenary is the planning forum we use to deepen our organization, enhance our organizing and lead the African working class beyond spontaneous protest and social media militancy to the capture of actual contending dual power designed to negate the colonial domination of our people and the oppressed peoples of the world.”

The APSP’s April 17-19 Plenary will include presentations, workshops and training sessions on:
<ul><li>Building a dual and contending economy and creating liberated territory.</li><li>Using the electoral process to seize political terrain. Candidates and former elected officials NY Assemblyman and NYC Councilman Charles Barron, St. Louis Alderman Jesse Todd, candidates Akile Anai, Jesse Nevel.</li><li>Security and self-defense for the community and the movement. Know your rights when the FBI knocks or you get stopped. With Unión de Barrio.&nbsp;</li><li>Campaign to repeal the Foreign Agent and Conspiracy laws used for political repression.&nbsp;</li><li>Dred Scott Sanctuary City Resolution expansion to protect African and other colonized communities from federal raids.</li><li>Unifying the African Nation for total liberation. On-the-ground reports from South Africa, Sierra Leone and Europe.&nbsp;</li><li>Independent Black-owned media. How to get involved!</li><li>Science, engineering, agriculture, education and healthcare in the service of African liberation.&nbsp;</li><li>African women are equal makers and shapers of history.Stop “Child Protective Services” kidnapping of Black children’; “Black Mothers March on the White House”.&nbsp;</li><li>Unity through reparations. How white people can stand in accountable solidarity with African liberation. APSC Chairwoman Penny Hess and Uhuru Solidarity Movement Chair Jesse Nevel report on reparations work.</li></ul>

Chairman Omali promises the upcoming Plenary will provide the ideological and practical leadership needed in this period. “In the 53 years of our Party’s existence, our leaders and institutions have survived police beatings, imprisonment, firebombings, FBI raids, armed assassination attempts, economic sanctions and other attempts to crush us. The Great River Coalition invites the community to celebrate Earth Day in support of pollinators at the 11th Annual Earth Day 5K Bee Run/Walk and River Cleanup on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis.
Participants can run or walk the scenic 5K or volunteer for the organized river cleanup, helping protect pollinators and support a healthier Mississippi River.
The event welcomes families and dogs and features Earth Day festivities including live music, kids’ activities, educational booths, prize drawings, and bee-themed photo ops with a selfie station and mascots. Pollinator costumes are encouraged, with awards for standout looks.
Hosted in partnership with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, National Park Service, and Mill City Running/St. City Running, the Bee Run/Walk brings together runners, walkers, volunteers, and environmental advocates for a morning of fitness, fun, and hands-on stewardship along the Mississippi River corridor.
Since 2016, the Great River Coalition has raised funds for pollinator plantings along the Mississippi River and built public awareness about the urgent need to protect native pollinators amid climate and environmental change. Native species, including the federally endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee, continue to need expanded habitat and food resources.
The 5K will start at 9 a.m. The kid’s race, with goodie bags, will begin at 8:30 a.m.— children must be age 6 or under and must be registered before the event, either online or in-person with registration of walker or runner. The River Clean Up begins at 9:30am. Volunteers should register online before the event.

zAmya Theater Project hosts a screening of filmmaker Stephen Apkon’s documentary “There Is Another Way” at Minneapolis Central Library. The film tells the story of Combatants for Peace, a bi-national movement of Palestinians and Israelis, including former enemy combatants, who reject violence and work together toward justice and peace.
Set against the devastation and escalating violence following October 7 and the war in Gaza, the film asks what becomes possible when people refuse to surrender to hatred and injustice, even as their deepest beliefs are tested.
This free public event will introduce audiences to the work of Israeli activist, theater scholar, and Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner Dr. Chen Alon, whose six-month virtual residency with zAmya is centered on the company’s ongoing Locked In program. More info at zamyatheater.org/chen-alon.
The screening will be followed by a Q&amp;A with filmmaker Stephen Apkon, Combatants for Peace co-founder Sulaiman Khatib, and Dr. Chen Alon, who will join via Zoom.
Since its emergence in Latin America in the 1970s, Theatre of the Oppressed has evolved as a tool for collective analysis, dialogue, and social change. Dr. Alon has developed what he calls a “Polarized” Theatre of the Oppressed model, designed to build trust and understanding between groups positioned in tension or conflict.
The April 19 screening serves as an introduction to Dr. Alon’s body of work and to zAmya’s continued exploration of Theatre of the Oppressed through Locked In, a project co-created by zAmya and EqualHealth’s Campaign Against Racism (CAR), a global movement of health workers organizing to dismantle structural racism in healthcare.
Locked In centers the experiences of people facing homelessness and examines systemic bias in healthcare against people who are unhoused. What began as a single script, Locked In: A Theatrical Dialogue about Healthcare and Homelessness, has grown into a body of work that now includes two short scenes and a full-length play performed in the Twin Cities, Chicago, and at the national Theatre of the Oppressed conference.
Dr. Chen Alon is a theater activist, actor, and director who wrote his Ph.D. on the Palestinian-Israeli Polarized Model of Theatre of the Oppressed in the Theatre Department at Tel Aviv University. A Major in the Israeli army reserves, he co-founded Courage to Refuse, a movement of officers and soldiers who refused to serve in the occupied Palestinian territories, for which he was sentenced to prison. During Black History Month, 100 Black Men of the Twin Cities and Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities Announce Partnership to Build the Next Generation of Black Leaders Minneapolis–St. Paul, MN — Feb. 10, 2026 — During Black History Month, 100 Black Men of the Twin Cities (100BMTC) and Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities (BBBSTC) announced a partnership to expand mentorship and leadership development for Black male youth across the Twin Cities. This partnership honors the legacy of Black leadership by increasing access to positive Black male role models and consistent developmental opportunities. BBBSTC currently has a waiting list of more than 600 youth, and due to high demand for male mentors, some young people wait more than two years for a match. In response, the organizations are mobilizing more Black men to serve as mentors while supporting youth through Jr. 100, a leadership initiative of 100BMTC that provides consistent engagement and exposure to Black leadership. “For more than sixty years, the 100 Black Men of America has affirmed that mentorship in the Black community is foundational,” said Kheph Rakhu, President of 100 Black Men of the Twin Cities. “Partnering with 100 Black Men Twin Cities reflects a shared commitment to showing up for Black youth with consistency and care,” said Pat Sukhum, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities. The partnership includes joint community events, coordinated storytelling, and the continued growth of the annual Black MENTors BBQ.
