Families Of 5 Women Killed In Crash Seek Independent Investigation

BLOOMINGTON, MN — The families of five young women killed in a Minneapolis car crash are seeking an independent investigation, according to KSTP.
Citing a state trooper’s involvement in the collision, Council on American-Islamic Relations Minnesota Executive Director Jaylani Hussein argued a non-state entity should handle the case during a press conference Monday in Bloomington, KSTP reported.
The June 16 incident took the lives of 20-year-old Salma Mohamed Abdikadir, 19-year-old Sagal Burhaan Hersi, 20-year-old Sahra Liban Gesaade, 19-year-old Siham Adan Odhowa and a 17-year-old girl, authorities said.

Derrick John Thompson, 27, is charged with 10 counts of vehicular homicide, according to authorities.
Around 10 p.m., a state trooper saw the rented Cadillac Escalade that Thompson was driving traveling 95 mph and weaving lanes on northbound Interstate 35 West, before it abruptly sped onto the Lake Street ramp and T-boned a Honda Civic crossing 2nd Avenue at a green light, authorities said.

The trooper tried to catch up to the Escalade, but it reached the exit ramp before a traffic stop was initiated or emergency lights or sirens were activated, according to authorities, who said the trooper witnessed the crash from about 0.15 miles south and rushed to aid the Civic.
