WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal agents searched the Washington, D.C., home of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar early Monday as part of a criminal investigation, The Associated Press reported, citing two people familiar with the matter who said Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted the search.

The people were not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, and the focus of the investigation was not immediately clear, the AP reported.

In a statement Monday, the Justice Department said HSI agents carried out a judicially authorized search warrant obtained by the department in the D.C. area as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The department did not release any other details.

Fox News said the search stems from a criminal fraud investigation into the Minneapolis Democrat's immigration paperwork, which her late father completed when she was a child.

The outlet reported that several agents in HSI jackets were seen outside the home before sunrise, and that the search follows White House border czar Tom Homan's statement in mid-September that Omar was under criminal investigation. Omar said at the time that the Department of Homeland Security had not notified her of any such probe.

Vice President JD Vance said in May that the Trump administration would look into immigration fraud allegations against Omar, which she has denied.

Republicans have long accused her of marrying her brother and committing immigration fraud, claims Omar has dismissed as "disgusting lies."

Omar, 44, represents Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis. She was first elected to the House in 2018.
