Property Manager 'Critical But Stable' In Minneapolis Attack, Family Says

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Family members have identified Jan Elaine Peterson, 56, of Blaine, as the Shoreline Plaza property manager who was shot and wounded in Wednesday's mass shooting at the downtown Minneapolis apartment building.

Richelle Bronson, who identified herself on a GoFundMe fundraiser as Peterson's sister-in-law, wrote that Peterson "was shot multiple times and is in critical condition but stable" and has undergone multiple surgeries.

"Please pray for my brother, their children/grandchildren and our family," Bronson wrote. The fundraiser, titled "Prayers and Healing for Our Family," had raised more than $8,000 toward a $9,000 goal as of Friday.

According to Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans, the shooting began outside the building when the gunman, identified as Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, shot a woman during what officials described as a child custody exchange.

Johnson then went inside and shot two building employees, a man and a woman, before taking an elevator to the ninth floor, where he shot and killed two residents.

Peterson is believed to be one of the two employees shot inside the building. The second employee, a man neighbors identified only as "Rusty," has not been officially named by police.

The two residents killed were identified by the BCA as Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse Abdi Afrah, 61.

Two Minneapolis police officers were shot as they pursued Johnson to the ninth floor.

Officer Joseph Michnowski, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot twice in the stomach, underwent surgery, and remained hospitalized as of Thursday. Officer Yahye Ahmed, who joined the department in November 2024, was shot in the leg and was released from the hospital Thursday.

A third officer was injured while responding to the scene, though not by gunfire, according to police.

Johnson died in the exchange of gunfire with officers on the ninth floor.

He had been fighting eviction from Shoreline Plaza, formerly known as Loring Towers, over a series of escalating incidents involving a firearm, with a trial that had been set for Sept. 11.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty's office said this week that it had declined to charge Johnson or seek a red flag order against him after a June 25 incident in which he displayed a firearm, citing insufficient evidence in both cases.
