Here's What Triggered Carson Wentz's $100K Bonus Against The Packers

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback Carson Wentz triggered a $100,000 bonus clause in his contract after leading the team to a comeback win over the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, according to contract tracker Spotrac.

Wentz entered the game in the first quarter after starter Kyler Murray suffered a concussion on a hit from Packers safety Javon Bullard.

He went 12 for 19, passing for 133 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, as Minnesota erased a 22-10 deficit to win 39-22.

Spotrac notes that Wentz's one-year, $3 million contract includes an incentive paying him $100,000 for every win in which he plays at least 60 percent of the offensive snaps, up to six times.

After that threshold, the bonus increases to $150,000 per qualifying win, also capped at six.

The Vikings defense set up the comeback that made the bonus possible, according to the team's own coverage of the game. Minnesota blitzed Packers quarterback Jordan Love on 78.3 percent of his dropbacks, the fourth-highest rate recorded by a defense since 2018, and forced a fumble late in the game that set up Minnesota's offense inside the 1-yard line.

A failed Green Bay fourth-down conversion in the third quarter also swung momentum before Minnesota reeled off 29 unanswered points.

With Murray expected to need roughly a week to clear the NFL's concussion protocol, Wentz is likely to start Minnesota's Week 2 game on the road against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 20.
