Jet Ski Explosion Injures 1 Over July 4 Weekend

The explosion happened on a lake in northern Minnesota just after the driver refueled the machine, authorities said.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MN — A 42-year-old Virginia, Minnesota man was injured over July 4 weekend after the jet ski he was riding on exploded.

On July 2, authorities responded to a report of a jet ski that exploded and had started on fire on Lake Little, located in northern Minnesota.

The driver had just refueled the machine, authorities said. When he was about 20 feet from shore, he tried to start it, which is when the jet ski's engine compartment exploded and the machine caught on fire.

The man — who was wearing his life jacket — jumped off and floated in the water until other bystanders from shore came to his assistance, authorities said.

The driver received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health in Virginia for treatment.
