TWIN CITIES, MN — Gov. Tim Walz said Friday that he is prepared for the "immediate extradition" of two Mall of America accused shooters who were arrested in Chicago on Thursday.

Shamar Alon Lark, 21, of Minneapolis, and Rashad Jamal May, 22, of Burnsville were arrested during a traffic stop conducted by the Chicago FBI's Fugitive Task Force at about 2:30 p.m.

Lark is accused of shooting inside the Mall of America before fleeing officers on Aug. 4, and May is accused of fleeing with him from the scene.

Walz said that he, state Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman will coordinate to quickly bring Lark and May back to Minnesota.

"Minnesotans deserve to know that people who commit brazen acts like the shooting at the Mall of America will be held accountable by Minnesota prosecutors and courts," Walz said in a statement.

"I am ready to act quickly to extradite the suspects who fled to Chicago. We will not delay in ensuring that these individuals face justice here in Minnesota."

Under Minnesota law, the governor has the power to issue interstate extradition warrants so that fleeing criminal suspects can be brought back for prosecution.

"I want to thank law enforcement for locating these individuals and Governor Walz for acting swiftly to extradite them to Minnesota for prosecution," said Hennepin County Attorney Freeman.

"I will ensure that they will be held accountable for their actions, which endangered dozens if not hundreds of people at the Mall of America. These brazen and reckless public shootings are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

So far, five people have been arrested in connection to the Aug. 4 shooting, including two hotel workers.

While the Twin Cities metro area continues to see high rates of violent crime, Walz announced Thursday that the State Patrol and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will continue their "unprecedented" presence in the Twin Cities through the Minnesota State Fair.

Walz also said that Metro Transit will increase patrol visibility to deter criminals.

Since the spring, the governor has allocated more than $6 million in federal funds for special state public safety efforts, according to his office.
