Memorial Service Planned Thursday For George Floyd

"It will be an important event, both for the City of Minneapolis, for Minnesota and for the nation," Gov. Tim Walz said.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—A memorial service for George Floyd is scheduled to take place this Thursday in Minneapolis. Ben Crump, an attorney for Floyd's family, made the announcement during a news conference Monday.

While he did not specify the location, the event is planned for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Gov. Tim Walz said the memorial service will serve as an opportunity to bring the community together.

“It will be an important event, both for the City of Minneapolis, for Minnesota and for the nation to watch that process of celebrating a life that was taken in front of us, an opportunity for leadership," the governor said during a news conference.

Crump said a memorial service in North Carolina is also planned for Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The location of that event is unknown at this time. According to the family's attorney, Floyd was born in North Carolina but was residing in Minneapolis at the time of his death.

Floyd's funeral is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 9 in Houston, Texas at 11 a.m., Crump said.

Fort Bend Memorial Planning Center in Rosharon, Texas recently posted a flyer on Facebook with a picture of Floyd stating that "funeral arrangements are forthcoming."

Floyd's family has established a memorial fund on GoFundMe. To date, the page has raised more than $7.5 million. A portion of the funds will be used to care for Floyd's children and pay for their education, the page said.
