CRYSTAL, MN — Myon Burrell, the man sentenced to life in prison as a teenager for the murder of an 11-year-old girl — and released 18 years later due to flaws in the case against him — was charged Friday with felony drug possession.

Police said they found illegal drugs in his vehicle during a traffic stop and $60,000 in cash in his Crystal home last week.

If convicted, Burrell faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Burrell bailed out of Hennepin County Jail with a $75,000 bond on Sunday. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday at 1:30 p.m.

The incident marks the second time Burrell has been charged with a felony since his release from prison in 2020. Last August, he was arrested during a traffic stop in Robbinsdale and charged with illegal drug and gun possession.

The Dakota County Attorney's Office is prosecuting both of Burrell's recent cases "on a conflict basis." Burrell was a paid member of Mary Moriarty's successful campaign to become the Hennepin County Attorney in 2022.

On May 9, officers stopped a white Chevy Tahoe "in Hennepin County" and Burrell was identified as the driver and only occupant, police said.

Burrell "took a long period of time to open the door," and officers "could not see what was happening" due to the dark tint of the windows, according to the criminal complaint.

Police found meth in the vehicle and during a search of Burrell's home, officers found a suitcase with $60,000 in cash and a business card with his name on it.
