Open Streets Northeast Returns To Minneapolis On Aug. 4

Open Streets Northeast returns Sunday, Aug. 4, for its seventh year — providing people a chance to enjoy city streets car-free.

From the City of Minneapolis: Open Streets Northeast returns Sunday, Aug. 4 for its seventh year, providing people a chance to enjoy city streets car-free by walking, biking or rolling.

The event takes place 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on portions of Central Avenue Northeast, 22nd Avenue Northeast and Monroe Street Northeast. Open Streets Northeast will feature more than 100 street space hosts with fun activities planned for all ages, including dancing and art projects. People will also have the chance to share their visions for an upcoming repaving project on Broadway Street Northeast with representatives from the City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County and local neighborhood organizations.

The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department will have a booth at Monroe Street Northeast and 13th Avenue Northeast on the east side of Logan Park. Staff will be on hand to share information about the development of the Minneapolis Transportation Action Plan and the Vision Zero Action Plan. The Transportation Action Plan will be a 10-year plan to implement the transportation vision outlined in the Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan. The Vision Zero Action Plan will be a three-year plan to advance the City’s commitment to ending traffic fatalities and severe injuries resulting from traffic crashes on our streets by 2027.

The City of Minneapolis and Our Streets Minneapolis are also collaborating for the second year on a social media campaign called #WeWalkMpls to highlight the stories of people who choose to walk for commuting and a primary way to get around the city. There will be a pop-up at Monroe Street and 20th Avenue Northeast to participate in a photo booth for the campaign. Share your walking stories by using the hashtag #WeWalkMpls on social media.

Upcoming Open Streets Minneapolis events for the 2019 season include Franklin (Sunday, Aug. 25), University of Minnesota + Motley (Sunday, Sept. 8), West Broadway (Saturday, Sept. 14) and Nicollet (Sunday, Sept. 22). The events run 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
