Happy Saturday, Minneapolis! Here's everything you need to know around town today.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy, showers around; warm. High: 72 Low: 57.

Here are the top stories today in Minneapolis:

  1. Hundreds of local residents have signed a petition to shorten the required quarantine period for Minneapolis Public Schools students. Currently, the school district has a mandated 14-day quarantine after "close exposure" to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, and working parents are concerned about their ability to continue juggling distance learning and childcare with their jobs. According to the CDC, quarantine can end after 10 days without testing if no symptoms have been reported during daily monitoring, or seven days if a diagnostic test from 48 hours prior comes back negative with no symptoms. (KSTP)
  2. A slew of local races will resume in Minneapolis and St. Paul this year after a pandemic hiatus. This weekend's roster of events includes a 10K race and the Twin Cities 5K on Saturday morning, and the Twin Cities 10 Mile Race and the Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday morning. Other smaller races will be taking place throughout the weekend. (Minneapolis Patch)
  3. On Friday, a man accused of shooting into the Minneapolis Police Department Third Precinct headquarters pleaded guilty to a federal riot charge. 24-year-old Ivan Hunter admitted he traveled from Texas to the Twin Cities to participate in the rioting that followed the death of George Floyd last year. According to court records, a video camera recorded Hunter firing over a dozen rounds from an AK-47 style semiautomatic rifle into the precinct. (KROC-AM)
  4. Activists are set to rally tomorrow in Minneapolis to defend reproductive rights and send a "clear message" to federal lawmakers and the U.S. Supreme Court. Local community groups and activist organizations, including Women's March MN, Unrestrict MN, NARAL Pro-Choice MN, Take Action Minnesota, and more, will join Minnesota residents in the protest against abortion bans like the one passed in Texas. Numerous similar protests are planned across the country this weekend ahead of the Supreme Court starting its new term on Monday. (Minneapolis Patch)
  5. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health has authorized a vaccine to protect rabbits against a highly contagious and deadly disease called Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus 2 (RHDV2). Between 70 and 90 percent of domestic and wild rabbits that contract RHDv2 will die between a day and a week after becoming infected. The first cases of the disease were confirmed in two indoor rabbits in Ramsey County just days ago, and the Board has now authorized licensed veterinarians to order and administer the RHDV2 vaccine.
