Suspect Arrested, 'All Clear' Given To UMN Campus

University of Minnesota police said they received "a specific threat to shoot persons on the TC campus" Thursday morning.

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota Police Department gave the "all clear" to return to campus at about 1 p.m. Thursday after a suspect was arrested.

"Chippewa County Sheriff has located the suspect and have him contained in their county. TC campus may resume normal operations," UMPD said in an update to students and faculty.

University students and employees were asked Thursday morning to avoid the area after police said someone threatened to shoot people on campus.

Around 7:30 a.m. police said they received "a specific threat to shoot persons on the TC campus from Joseph Mark Rongstad." All buildings were open to UCard access only.

Police issued several updates throughout the morning, including one at about 11:30 a.m. that stated "Public Safety is monitoring the progress of the investigation and search for the suspect. The campus community is advised to continue to avoid campus."

Meanwhile, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office — located 2 1/2 hours west of Minneapolis — launched its own investigation into the situation.
