Violent Crime Dropped In The Twin Cities Metro, Police Data Shows

Violent crime was reportedly down during the first half of 2023 across the Twin Cities and surrounding towns and suburbs.

TWIN CITIES, MN — Violent crime in the Twin Cities metro area was down during the first half of 2023, according to state data released Wednesday.

Crime dropped 11 percent from where it was during the first year of 2022, according to a report from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The seven-county metro — which includes Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington County — saw the following reductions:

  • Homicide: down 22 percent
  • Rape: down 17 percent
  • Robbery: down 21 percent
  • Aggravated assault: down 6 percent

The metro-wide murder rate has declined since its post-pandemic peak in 2021 when 171 murders were recorded.

There were 152 murders recorded in 2022 and 61 so far in 2023.
