SCS is looking for a few more great men and women to join our Medicare Health Insurance Counseling program by becoming a volunteer.
SCS has been providing services to seniors in your community for over 62 years. One of those programs is the Medicare Health Insurance Counseling program. Most of the services are provided by volunteers. We are having a training for new MHIC volunteers this Summer. The application process needs to be completed before a volunteer can attend the training.
MHIC volunteers help Medicare beneficiaries and their families with:
• Medicare questions: • Help in supplement and Part D Plan selection, • Long Term Care Questions, • Low Income Options, • Social Security Questions, • Medical bill organization, • Appeals work • Resource & referral help.
They provide this assistance through: • Presentations, • Face-to-face meetings, • Phone help, • Research, • Appeals work, • Medicare.gov lookups, • Creating handouts, etc.

Our service area includes Hennepin and Wright Counties. However, we answer questions from all over Minnesota.
The 21 hr training includes a training manual, meeting some of the seasoned volunteers and lunch each day. Then after training, we work on client assignments. Many volunteers shadow with another MHIC volunteer when working with clients. We always have staff available to be in support to our volunteers.
No insurance experience necessary, but the ability to be detail oriented and a year commitment are. There are ongoing trainings for current MHIC volunteers to keep all current on Medicare issues. We are looking for people that have a willingness to learn about Medicare and help others with their questions.
