It's Not an invasive, it's Pilewort.
Pilewort is a native plant that comes in after buckthorn removal.
That's the word from Janet Van Sloun, Minnetonka Natural Resources Restoration Specialist. For many years, I've been removing buckthorn from my yard, only to have it replaced by other nasty invasives, such as garlic mustard. This year, a large portion of the yard is covered by a 1 to 4 foot tall plant with serrated leaves and multiple seed pods on top, when open containing many silky white feathery seeds, similar to dandelion tops. I pulled a sample and took it to Public Works and left it for Janet to identify. She soon called with an encouraging message. She said it's Pilewort, a native plant that often moves in after buckthorn removal. It comes under control and diminishes as other plants provide shade. I don't need to pull it. What a relief. I don't need any more yard work!
