The details that fall through the cracks in book publishing but are crucial to creating a top-selling book is the topic of the January meeting of the Midwest Independent Publishers Association (MIPA). “Getting the Words Right — from the Copyright Page to the Back Cover” will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the Carondelet Center in St. Paul. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Often these are the last things the publisher thinks about, but really they need to be considered early on in the process. Presenters will cover:

· Writing strong back cover copy that attracts buyers. What are the components of a good back cover for both fiction and nonfiction books? What kind of copy sells books?

· Using the copyright page effectively. What is all the information you need on a copyright page and what does it cost? Where does the publisher’s logo and other trademark information go? Is a CIP block necessary? Are disclaimers necessary?

· Providing useful front matter and back matter information. What should be in the following and in what order should they be presented: preface, introduction, epilogue, author’s notes, acknowledgments, author bio, glossary?
