Minnetonka Rotary Supports Assistance League

May 7th at 7:30am at the Minnetonka Rotary weekly meeting, Karen Schwartzenbauer spoke about some of the things that the Assistance League of Minneapolis St. Paul does.

The Assistance League was chartered in the 1900s just after the turn of the century with the premise of helping the less fortunate. Funding was difficult but means were found to survive and grow. The Assistance League is now involved in clothing kits for hospital victims. Its clothing program has expanded to include children in need, providing new school clothing. There is a backpack program that distributes food to needy families every week. There is a child reading program that helps school age children develop a love of reading. There is a student achievement award program that acknowledges the efforts and achievements of grade school children with a gift certificate in front of their parents making everyone feel proud. There is a GED Graduation Ceremony that also acknowledges the fact that students that didn’t finish high school in the regular fashion had the courage and perseverance to succeed and celebrates that fact.

The Assistance League runs the Thrift Store, in Richfield at 6416 Penn Avenue South to provide used items to the less fortunate and to help fund the Assistance League’s work. The Minnetonka Rotary Foundation provided the Assistance League of Minneapolis St. Paul with a check for $1000. The Minnetonka Rotary endorses and thanks the Assistance League for the work they do in our metropolitan area.
