Music Association of Minnetonka Introduces New Choral Program: Chorus a la Carte(TM)
Offering provides modern twist to participation in a choral ensemble.
The Music Association of Minnetonka (M.A.M.) recently challenged itself to develop a high-quality choral experience that was flexible, attractive to busy people who may not want to commit to a full performance season, and less intimidating than a traditional auditioned ensemble. The new program is called Chorus à la Carte and its inaugural season began in April 2016.
Chorus à la Carte is a six-week rehearsal and performance event with an enticing theme, like Broadway, Spiritual or Celtic music. The program focuses on the members as much as the music, providing an inclusive atmosphere and emphasizing the enjoyment of singing with other people.
Betty Mackay, president of M.A.M.’s Board of Directors, is a strong supporter of the new program. “Our goal at M.A.M. is to provide a wide variety of ways for people in the community to become involved in music. We're always looking for ways to reach new members and thought that with Chorus à la Carte we'd be serving a new group of people.”

Chorus à la Carte has attracted individuals who loved singing or who played music in high school or college but felt a bit rusty. New member Judith Robblee of Minnetonka is one of those people. "I was so excited to hear about Chorus à la Carte, because the demographic was exactly for me! I haven't been active in music since high school when I played flute in the band. I love to sing but haven't had an opportunity to be a part of a group. Chorus à la Carte provides such a fun and supportive environment. I'm learning a lot PLUS we sound great! I'm looking forward to the next session!"
David Halligan is the Spring 2016 Chorus à la Carte Director. He says, “I am delighted to see that M.A.M. has identified a need for this type of venue in our community as we lead such busy lives and we ‘put off’ what calls us. It gives the singers a chance to reconnect with the past experience of being involved with a group and to enjoy singing and laughing together with no rules or commitments.” He also adds, “I am amazed at the amount of talent that has come together and am truly honored to be part of it. It has been an incredible journey for all those involved.”
