State to Auction 5,000 Safe Deposit Boxes in Minnetonka Next Week

The boxes include collectible coins, historical items and sports memorabilia.

Collectible coins, an autographed Babe Ruth baseball and military memorabilia are just some of the items up for sale at a Minnetonka auction of unclaimed safe deposit box contents.

By law, safe deposit boxes are considered abandoned five years after the lease or rental period expired because of nonpayment. When that happens, banks open the boxes, inventory the contents and turn it in to the State of Minnesota’s Unclaimed Property Program.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce has scheduled an auction for the contents of 5,000 safe deposit boxes for 8:30 a.m. July 25 and 26. The auction takes place in the Sheraton Minneapolis West Hotel ballroom (12201 Ridgedale Drive, Minnetonka).
