Strom Engineering Kept American Crystal Sugar Going During Labor Dispute

The Minnetonka-based company has made a name for itself supplying temporary workers.

Union members working for American Crystal Sugar headed back to work this week after being locked out for 20 months while negotiating a new labor contract.

But the Minnesota, Iowa and North Dakota plants didn’t cease production with the lockout of nearly 1,300 members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International union worked. Minnetonka-based Strom Engineering Corp. supplied replacement workers while the two sides remained at an impasse.

The 24-employee company has become “one of the nation’s best-regarded firms for labor-dispute contingency planning, and temporary workforce placement and management,” according to Twin Cities Business.
