Minnetonka Cops Cite Timberwolves Star for Marijuana

Minnetonka police stopped Michael Beasley for speeding on I-394; car search turns up suspicious bag under front seat.

Minnetonka Police found what they believe is marijuana inside the car of pro basketball player Michael Beasley during a traffic stop last week.

Beasley, a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, was pulled over by Minnetonka police on Interstate 394 at Carlson Parkway at 3 a.m. on June 26. Police reported Beasley was traveling 84 mph in the 65 mph zone.

During the traffic stop, according to Minnetonka Police Capt. Scott Boerboom, officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the inside the black 2012 Dodge Charger which Beasley was driving.

Beasley reportedly told police that he was driving back to his Orono home after dropping off a friend in St. Louis Park. According to the police report, Beasley told officers the friend was the one who had marijuana in the car.

In a search of the car Minnetonka police officers found a plastic bag under the front seat containing 16.2 grams of a substance they believe is marijuana.

The 22-year-old pro basketball player “appeared overly nervous” during the search of his car, police said in the report. Beasley was cited for speeding and for possession of marijuana and released with a $295.00 ticket. It's the second time this year that Beasley has been cited for speeding in Hennepin County.

Beasley’s attorney, Emanuel Serstock, had no comment on the discovery when reached earlier today.

Beasley, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound power forward, was acquired by the Timberwolves from the Miami Heat in July 2010.

In a 2010 interview with ESPN Radio in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Timberwolves general manager David Kahn said Beasley didn't reach his full potential while playing for the Miami Heat because he "smoked too much marijuana.” Kahn was fined by the NBA for the comment.

Beasley played in 73 games with the Timberwolves last season, averaging 19.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Alongside Kevin Love, Beasley made up a consistent scoring threat for Minnesota during his first season with the Wolves.

Beasley spent one year at Kansas State before being drafted by Miami second overall during the 2008 NBA Draft.
