Video: Minnetonka Residents Thrilled about the 'Thriller' Dance

More than a dozen people paid $14 each to learn the dance from the famous Michael Jackson music video.

On Friday, March 4 at the , a lively group of participants tried their best to mimic the undead as part of the Thriller Line Dance Workshop.

"It's one night, it's an hour and a half, and they can just learn choreography and the can be like 'Dancing with the Stars' for an hour and a half," said Monica Mohn, the dance instructor teaching the class. "And they can go home when they're done."

In that hour and a half, 15 people — who admit they were in awe of the video Michael Jackson made famous in 1983 — followed Mohn's every movement and command.

Ask the dancing students what brought them to the class on a Friday night, and it was apparent that Jackson's legacy continues to live on after his death.

"It's Michael Jackson, so the dances always look fun," said Samuel Craig of Minneapolis.

"I've always loved Michael Jackson, like from the ABC times," said Janet Paul of Minnetonka, referring to Jackson's time with the Jackson 5.

Mohn, (the dancing instructor who is also a competitive ballroom dancer), said she started teaching the choreography for "Thriller" because people wanted to learn it for weddings.

"The music is just danceable," Mohn said. "When you put it on, people want to move."

And move, they did. It took about an hour for everyone to learn the dance steps, but once that part was out of the way, they turned "Thriller" into a line dance, whether they continuously made their way around the room. All the while, the students tried to do their best impersonation of a dance that's a part of pop culture history.

"Watch out," said Paul of her newfound dance moves. "We have wedding dances coming up that are just gonna see this like ad nauseam."

The next Thriller Line Dance Workshop will be Wednesday, May 25 at the Minnetonka Community Education Center from 7 p.m to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $14.
