(Mansfield, TX) – They weren’t looking for love, but that’s what Jody Murray, 58, and Ed Colbert, 76, have discovered after moving into Album Mansfield, a 55+ Active Adult Community in Mansfield, Texas.

“We moved in at the same time—in July 2022—but we didn’t meet each other right away,” said Murray, who credits Colbert’s dogs, Heidi, a yellow labrador and Lucy, a boxer/pit-bull mix, with bringing them together.

“My dogs didn’t come with me, and I missed them,” said Murray. “So, I started giving lots of love to his dogs.”

It wasn’t long before she said to him, “I think I need to spend a bit more time with your dogs.” Of course that meant she would be spending more time with him too. As they got to know each other, the couple learned they had a lot more in common than just their love for dogs.

They are also both divorcees with children and grandchildren; and they both come from families that moved around a lot when they were younger. “We even have the same birthday—May 24th,” said Murray.

She and Colbert have been a couple for about a year now. He is a retiree, having spent a long career in the military. She is still working as a first-grade teacher at The Oak Ridge School, a private school in Arlington, Texas.

“While Jody is at work during the day, I spend a lot of time visiting with my neighbors, many of whom like to play cards,” said Colbert. “The people here are nice. The staff is really good. Overall, it’s a pretty neat place to be.”

While Colbert’s favorite thing about the community is the people, Murray says she loves the feeling she gets every time she enters the building. “It’s a really nice place to live. I feel very safe here. I feel comfortable here. It’s home. I probably will stay here for a long, long time.”

Colbert and Murray are among the hundreds of thousands of older Americans who have decided to move into active adult communities after raising their families. According to Seniors Housing Business, there are more than 2,000 active adult communities in the United States.

“Active Adult” is defined as purpose-driven multifamily housing for seniors with an emphasis on community and activities.
